How pattern search works

A pattern describes a word one letter at a time. Known letters stay as they are and each unknown letter becomes an underscore or a question mark. _A_E_ means a five-letter word with A second and E fourth, which matches words like baked, cakes and water. Spaces are ignored, so _ A _ E _ works too.

Use it for crosswords and guessing games

  • Crosswords: type the letters you have from crossing answers, with blanks for the empty squares.
  • Five-letter guessing games: put green letters in the pattern, yellow letters in Must include letters, and gray letters in Exclude letters. Do not repeat green letters under Must include letters: it only counts letters outside the pattern.
  • Board games: add your tiles under Only use these letters to find words that fit a gap on the board. Letters already in the pattern do not need to be in your tiles.
